Diamond Shapes
The shape of a diamond refers to the cutting style of the stone. Many hundreds of diamond shapes are available on the market with the most popular found worldwide.
The original rough diamond determines the final shape of a diamond. A master diamond cutter may take many months perfecting the cutting style of a diamond.
The shape of a diamond can greatly affect the sparkle and brilliance of the diamond as well as the price.
Round Brilliant Diamond
Easily the most popular of all diamond cuts; the round brilliant cut diamond has been perfected over many years by many masterful cutters. An ideal design exists for the cutting method of a round brilliant cut diamond to ensure maximum brilliance and sparkle.
To create the perfect round brilliant cut diamond, the rough diamond needs to be the ideal shape, unlike many fancy cut diamonds can be created from odd shaped rough diamonds.
Round brilliant cut diamonds are the most expensive of all the commonly known cuts. This is because cutting a round brilliant cut diamond results in a large amount of the rough diamond being lost in the process.
Round brilliant cut diamonds have 58 facets. The facets act like little mirrors, which reflect the light in and around the diamond resulting in sparkle from any angle.
Almost all diamonds have a brilliant cut pattern. This cutting style refers to the faceting structure. Brilliant cut diamonds are much brighter than other cuts.
Cushion Cut Diamond
Cushion cut diamonds are often square or rectangular shaped with rounded edges; similar in appearance to a pillow. The cushion cut has 58 facets aligned like the brilliant cut , which return the light in a needle like pattern. These gorgeous diamonds are extremely popular and must be cut perfectly to ensure the sparkle brilliantly.
Because of the soft, rounded shape, Cushion cut diamonds are the ideal cutting style for retaining the colour in a diamond. This can be perfect when cutting an intense pink diamond but maybe not so if you are looking for a brilliant white diamond. Each cushion cut diamond is selected based on its visual appearance, in person, rather than by its colour grade.
Cushion cut diamonds are available in a modified cut as well. These diamonds have extra faceting just below the girdle and on the pavilion allowing for extra sparkle.
Oval Diamond
The shape of an oval cut diamond can vary slightly from a squarish oval to a long thin oval. The ends of an oval cut diamond should be rounded and never flat. Oval cut diamonds are very popular for long slender fingers as they can accentuate length. The oval cut diamond is also a modified brilliant cut diamond also with 58 facets.
Marquise Diamond
The Marquise cut is a modified round brilliant cut meaning this particular diamond cut is an elongated version of the round brilliant cut The Marquise cut diamond is boat shaped with two pointed ends. There are no standard proportions for the marquise cut diamonds, however if not cut precisely; the diamond may sometimes appear darker in the center. This is known as a ‘bow’ effect. Our Marquise cut diamonds are always cut to ensure maximum brilliance.
Pear Shaped Diamond
The pear shaped diamond is also a modified round brilliant cut diamond. Pear shaped diamonds may be quite thin or appear quite wide. They are cut with rounded shoulders leading to a point. As with the marquise cut diamond, if not cut well is also prone to the bow tie effect. Perfectly matched pair cut diamonds are a rare but beautiful occurrence, ideal for complimenting shoulder stones or earrings.
Heart Shaped Diamond
These modified brilliant cut diamonds are typically made up of 59 facets. The light reflected from a heart shape tends to radiate from the center of the stone. Many diamond buyers purchase a heart shaped diamond as it represents the ultimate symbol of love. Heart shaped diamonds are ideal for setting into diamond engagement rings.
Emerald Cut Diamond
Emerald cut diamonds are generally rectangular or square in shape. They are step cut diamonds with rows of facets creating a staircase effect. Like baguette cuts, emerald cuts are very clear and can easily reveal inclusions within the stone. Our selection process ensures only the clearest emerald cut diamonds are used in our Jewellery.
Square emerald cut diamonds, also known as Asscher cut diamonds consist of the same cutting style following a square design. These elegant diamonds are stunning in high colour and clarity grades, as the simple faceting structure creates a mirror like effect
Princess Cut Diamond
The princess cut diamond is typically cut perfectly square but is often slightly rectangular. The princess cut diamond has an average of 76 facets, positioned perfectly to ensure maximum reflection. This is one of the most popular fancy shaped diamonds. Diamond buyers should avoid stones that are too flat or too deep, this can drastically alter the look of the stone.
Radiant Cut Diamond
Often found in a square or rectangular shape, the radiant cut diamond has a brilliant cut center with cut corners similar to the emerald cut diamond. Most radiant cut diamonds will have 62 facets, in some cases there may be as many as 70 facets forming this cutting style. As with the marquise and the oval cut diamonds, radiant cut diamonds can succumb to the bow tie effect.
